Buy them frozen. Some companies make frozen fries with gourmet ingredients and good-for-you fats. Look for those with no more than 120 calories and 3.5 g of fat per 3-ounce serving. We like Alexia Olive Oil & Sea Salt Oven Fries, Ian’s Sweet Potato Fries, and Cascadian Farm Organic Wedge Cut Oven Fries.
Get ’em to go. Some fast-food chains now offer baked “air fries.” One 3-ounce serving has about 180 calories, 6 g of fat, and 1 g of saturated fat. Find them at Topz (California, Michigan, Texas), KnowFat! (Massachusetts, Minnesota), and EVOS (Florida, Nevada).
Make your own. You can cook an antioxidant-rich indulgence from scratch:
Rainbow Fries (4 servings) Cut 5 blue (or purple) potatoes (about 3/4 lb) lengthwise into 1/2" wedges. Soak in cold water 45 minutes. Meanwhile, cut 1 medium sweet potato (about 1/2 lb) lengthwise into 1/2" wedges. Preheat oven to 425°F. Drain and dry blue potatoes and toss with sweet potatoes, 3 tsp olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste. Arrange flat on baking sheet. Cook 40 minutes, turning once, or until browned.
